"As we get ever closer to the official release of Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system, we have to ask ourselves what comes next--or is this the end? I think it is the end, for a lot of reasons.
First, it's possible that Microsoft is out of ideas, and Apple is out of ideas from which Microsoft can borrow." -John C. Dvorak of PC Magazine.

| I think alot of people are going to make the switch from Microsoft to either Mac or Linux. Linux I am not to sure about because most users are more advanced in computing to use that operating system. Mac is surprisingly doing well in sales and has convinced alot of people that it might be a better platform. With Chad's purchase of the Mac Book Pro and research I like the way Mac has changed and wouldn't mind trying that as my next Laptop as well. A big thing is how big companies such as Dell and Gateway going to do with the sales of computers to meet the requirements for Vista, such as 512 Ram, a 128+ Video Card meaning no more crappy Integratted worthless pieces of garbage, and Hard Drive Space 40 GB Minimum. I love to also see how Microsoft is going to prevent the illegal copies of Vista and Office 2007 as alot more Americans know how to pull it off. |

To pluck from the final paragraph of the same article:
"Once Vista emerges and the OS scene is reset for another two or three years, there will be an opportunity for something new to become the rage. It may finally give the slowly growing Linux a chance to capture the desktop and change the way we spend our money. Everyone would love to get off Microsoft's expensive treadmill. Opportunity is knocking. Will anyone answer?"
My big concern isn't even necessarily Vista itself, but DirectX 10. It'll require all new graphics cards (old ones will work, but new ones will have drastic improvements over the old). I'm in the mood to upgrade my shit, but I'll have to wait and see what BFG will be bringing to the DX10 party, when the time comes. |

I'm not a big fan of Vista, its messy graphics whorage, its price tag, etc, but as Adam mentioned the DX10 will be a problem without it. I will remain with XP as long as I can, which will probably be dependant on when video games stop supporting DX9.
As for Mac, it has nice features and all, but Windows (other than bugs/crashing) works well for me in terms of functionality in the layouts, menus, etc and especially video games.
Linux is neat enough, but won't be something I plan to use unless I implement it on a server-type box that has poor specs or a similar laptop for use at class or simple tasks (word processing, etc). |

Apple is releasing their new OS also:

I do think that Vista will be nice, from what I've heard it should be a vast improvement in the way that XP was leaps-and-bounds above ME. I wouldn't expect my computer to sway anyone to mac (it has) but I would seriously consider looking into alternatives to the new Windows if MS will jack up the price and require all new hardware. We'll see I suppose, and it will happen regardless. |

| as an update, MSDNAA lists Vista on their downloadable software now, so I'll be installing that on the windows side of my mac ASAP. On a similar note, I D/L'd antivirus protection from AOL (stupid stupid stupid) and Windows is having epileptic fits, so...yea, Vista here we come. I'll be sending my mac in for a few dead pixels on the screen |

| The new DX10 nvidia cards are out too, 8800 I believe. And so begins another $2000 upgrade venture (card, dual-core processor [games are now telling me that my processor doesn't meet recommended requirements], mobo to support the dual-core processor, and possibly a memory upgrade). Such B.S. |
